Values of Miss America Pageant Essays -- Beauty

She’s intelligence and humility. She’s fair and honesty. She’s Miss United States. These are not the lyrics to the song that is played after a contestant wins the ever-so coveted crown. These are not lyrics to any song at all actually. But why not? Aren’t those all attributes most people yearn for? While of course these characteristics are things everyone tries to perfect throughout their lifetime, this is not the focal point of the Miss America pageant. The actual lyrics are; â€Å"She’s beauty and she’s grace. She’s queen of 50 states. She’s elegance and taste. She’s Miss United States† (Miss Congeniality). It is shocking to see the digression in humanity’s morals and values over the past decade. As clichà © as it sounds, the media is the center of it all. The way women are being represented, from our television sets, the radio, pornography and even art has pushed beauty to the top of the list of controversial and widely debated topics around the globe. â€Å"Whenever we walk down the street, watch TV, open a magazine or enter an art gallery, we are faced with images of femininity,† (Watson and Martin). Beauty pageants are no help to the cause either. Miss America has become a job for women that represent their country from the way their face looks, rather than their ideas and vocal capabilities. We have become a nation centered around beauty and appearance and this annual television show has followed in this trend’s wake. American’s unneeded celebration of beauty in the pageantry world is digging a hole for the country and has been the contributing factor to the downward spiral we are presently in. The system of this pageant needs to change tremendously in order for it to become a beneficial contest in the future. Beauty pageants to... ...d. Global Warming Assignment “Summary” Essay

Global warming what is it? Global warming refers to an average increase in theEarth’s temperature, which in turn causes changes in climate. So what’s the big deal you  ask? Well the big deal is, if temperatures rise above normal levels for a few days, it’s no big deal, the Earth will stay more or less the same, but if temperatures continue to rise over a longer period of time, then the Earth may experience some serious problems! What causes global warming? The Earth’s atmosphere contains gases that naturally help to hold in heat, these natural Greenhouse gases keep our atmosphere warm  long after the sun has set and absorb the Sun’s heat during the day, keeping thetemperature from getting to high. Over the past 100 years, humans have altered the  chemical composition of the earth’s atmosphere through the buildup of greenhouse gases, therefore resulting in Global Warming. Why are greenhouse gas concentrations  increasing? Some greenhouse gases occur naturally in the atmosphere, while others result from human activities. Naturally occurring greenhouse gases include carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide. Certain human activities, add to the levels of most of these  naturally occurring gases. Carbon dioxide is released when solid waste, fossil fuels (oil, natural gas, and coal), and wood are burned. Methane is emitted during the production and transport of coal, natural gas, and oil. Methane emissions also result from the decomposition of organic wastes in landfills and the raising of livestock. Finally Nitrous oxide is emitted during agricultural and industrial activities. What are some of the effects, due to global warming? Surface temperatures have increased 1.0 °C-3 °C since the late 19th century. The 20th century’s 10  warmest years  have all occurred in the last 15 years of the century. Worldwide precipitation over land has increased by about one percent and globally, sea level has risen 4-8 inches over the past century. Global warming has also decreased snow cover in the northern hemisphere, and melted glaciers. Changing regional climate could alter crops yields, water supplies, and forests. It could also affect the health of ecosystems, animals and even humans.

ConclusionOther ice cream parlors may offer a larger array of flavors; however, Little League Sco ops smaller assortment is always freshly homemade. There is no comparison to homemade ice cream at competitive prices. There is no comparison to encouraging the youth to stay fit and active. Providing a healthy refreshing treat after a ball game will keep the children eager to participate in summertime activities, instead of sitting in front of a video game. No price can be placed on the health of the future. Todays’ youth are tomorrow’s leaders.Encouraging them today will show them they can do anything they put their minds to. Free Essays on Jackson Vs. Jefferson

Compare and contrast the political philosophies and policies of Jefferson and Jackson. Both Thomas Jefferson and Andrew Jackson brought an amazing era that made a great impact in America. However, although these two men had many similarities, they also had many differences in their political philosophies and policies. In terms of political philosophies, Jefferson and Jackson both favored a strict interpretation of the Constitution. For instance, Jefferson was against Hamilton’s financial plan with the Bank of the United States because he felt that the Constitution did not specifically authorize Congress to pass such bills. For the very same reason, Jackson did not like the Bank of the United States during his time because he too felt that it was unconstitutional. However, during Jefferson’s time, his views on a strict interpretation of the Constitution changed. Jefferson knew that the government couldn’t add new territory or grant American citizenship to the 50,000 residents in the Louisiana Territory in 1803 under the Constitution, but under these circumstances he used a loose interpretation of the Constitution and had the senate ratify the treaty of the Louisiana Purchase. With the national debt, both men had great desires to abolish it. Jefferson lowered the national debt from $83 million to $57 million and Jackson in 1836 had the whole nation totally debt free. During their campaigns, both men stated that they were for the common man, but their views and actions for the common man varied. Jefferson felt that an ordinary citizen could be educated to determine that which was right while Jackson felt that an ordinary citizen knew that which was right from his own instincts. Jefferson and Jackson both supported the fact that the majority should rule. However, Jackson did more to get the common people involved in the national government. By the Same Token

By the Same Token By the Same Token By the Same Token By Maeve Maddox The word token is used with several meanings. From an Old English verb meaning â€Å"to show,† in the broadest sense a token is â€Å"something that serves to indicate a fact; a sign or a symbol.† The sign could be miraculous or merely evidence of something:    I do set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a token of a covenant between me and the earth. Genesis, 9:13, KJV God granted these holy men [the 100 fed miraculously by Elisha] a gracious token that the famine had lifted The retiring employee received a watch as a token of the company’s appreciation. As a physical object, a token may be a metal or plastic disk that serves to show that money has been paid for transportation or admission (e.g., a bus token). Board games like Monopoly include tokens used in play. The expression â€Å"by the same token† means â€Å"for the same reason† or â€Å"in the same way.† Here are two correct examples of its use: there was little evidence to substantiate the gossip and, by the same token, there was little to disprove it –example, OxfordDictionaries because his mind is flexible it responds quickly †¦ to what is before it, and by the same token it can call up from within a host of appropriate ideas example, Merriam-Webster As is happening to many venerable expressions in this age of limited reading of traditional literature, â€Å"by the same token† is being altered by speakers who aren’t quite sure how to use it: However at the same token, this same conversation could apply to couples who go through that process together In the same token, it cannot disregard basic issues of translation theory. Does my body include the oxygen I am about to inhale and, on the same token, should I include the air I am about to exhale? Not only is the preposition by being incorrectly replaced by at, in or on, the meaning is being lost: I dont dislike dogs (or other animals), but by the same token, I dont want them in my house. Here the meaning seems to be â€Å"on the other hand.† With a documentation date of 1463, â€Å"by the same token† has had a good run in English. Could be that the expression–for some speakers at least–has reached retirement age. Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? QUEEN CHRISTINA IN THE LIGHTS OF GERMAN EXPRESSIONISM Essay

QUEEN CHRISTINA IN THE LIGHTS OF GERMAN EXPRESSIONISM - Essay Example The movie shows us Queen Christina's personal desire for love and happiness and her affair with the Spanish Ambassador, Don Antonio De Pimentel. However, ultimately he dies leaving their love unfulfilled. Another aspect of the movie, which is of significance, is that Queen Christina wanted to be a human and not just some object, like women were treated in that time. Queen Christina displays German Expressionism, which was a kind of film movement and refers to the numerous interrelated artistic movements that had come about in Germany. Interweaving German Expressionist in the movies of the 1930's was an upcoming and new style, which was widely shown in many movies. Most of the developments, which took place in Germany, were due to this movement. A number of movies, including Queen Christina, served an important role in transporting the private emotions of a person in the open and thus, is intimately related to the concepts and ideas of the German Expressionism. As emphasized by German Expressionism the movie gives us emotional and extremely personal reactions. This movie uses many dark and light contrasts with tilted angles, exaggeration and dreamy atmospheres. In the early 19th century, most of the German films were copied from foreign films or were made for commercial usage. However, due to its intense success many other movies displaying expre ssionist style started appearing. After the First World War Germany faced confusion and unrest and there was hysteric misery everywhere. Social pressure created an atmosphere of terror. Queen Christina completely thrives on the continuous and always present fantastic, gruesome and mysterious element of terror. In addition, the film industry in Germany suffered a lot when the German economy was recovering. As inflation grew in Germany, films were very cheap and were easily sold in the foreign markets. However, with these upcoming Expressionist movies their budget raised making them a competition for the foreign movies. (Lamb, 2004) This movie also contains a number of elements of German Feminism. Throughout history, the story and lives of especially the women have been neglected to a larger amount. Their roles in various political matters, cultural and social changes have often been ignored. Queen Christina is feminist in the solid views that it has given. It gives us various views about bisexuality, female nobility and homosexuality. Queen Christina is one of the most appreciated movies of all times and gives us an insight to the personal and delicate struggle that women go through while trying to surpass the feelings she has towards a person whom society does not approve of. It shows us a delicate character of a very strong yet emotional woman facing many difficulties. Since it has portrayed bisexuals, the movie has often been criticized and disputed by a number of people. Queen Christina was one of the greatest movies in the wonderful era of silent movies. Although the movie contains elements of that time, it is amazingly ahead of time. It displays qualities of rich art at several levels. Queen Christina's secret love affair with the Spanish Ambassador served as a catalyst bringing up questions about Queen Christina's perspective, duty and also her

Starbucks Issues and Solutions Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Starbucks Issues and Solutions - Essay Example Certain solutions for resolving the ethical dilemma of becoming a curator of popular culture for Starbuck’s are presented here. First are the alleged financial links to the Israeli government. The strategies used by boycott organizers to generate awareness for their campaign and to manage media usage to target desired audiences are also discussed (Knudsen, K., Aggarwal & P. Maamoun, A. 2008). Starbucks was targeted because of its CEO’s comments on Israel-Palestinian conflict issue. Starbucks was the prime target of an Arab boycott after remarks CEO Howard Shultz made in Seattle. Boycott strategies have been classified into three domains: awareness, media, and targeting. Many people have begun to regard Starbucks’ corporate image as snooty. Customers are of diverse ethnic, income and age groups (Cherian, C., Dasgupta, N. & Doreswamy, A. G., 2007). Starbucks has learned to embrace the diversity and provide better customer service. Every campaign is approved through a panel about potential issues the adjusted based on its recommendations. The best course of action is a method of strategic cooperation (Mahapatra, S. & Saklani, A., 2007). Three things can trigger boycott calls: government actions, corporate actions, and individual actions. Starbucks should respond to rumors, distance itself from controversial issues, making charitable contributions, emphasize local connections, demonstrate the impact on the local economy, localize the marketing mix and influence government actions.
